“Click.”
“Thud.”
Chu Fan gently opened the door and quietly closed it.
As the door creaked open, he swiftly stepped out, and an indescribable stench of rotten flesh instantly filled his mind, relentlessly assaulting the nerve center of his brain.
He felt as if his brain was about to break down at this moment, on the verge of becoming something other than himself.
The putrid smell outside was overwhelming, utterly repugnant, almost enough to make him pass out.
"This is freaking unbearable, so disgusting!"
"Ugh..."
Chu Fan's stomach churned, and his body trembled slightly, causing him to retch.
"If I had known, I would have familiarized myself with the smell of stinky socks before coming out. Get used to the stench first," he thought to himself.
In Chu Fan's trash can at the moment were still Han Xiaoya's and his smelly socks, the kind that they hadn't changed for a week because they were too busy buying food.
Let me tell you another secret! This must not be leaked!!!
That is, Han Xiaoya's little loli feet are really freaking stinky!!! Can you imagine how stinky the feet of this small, cute princess are? Even the athlete's foot doesn't match the stench from her little feet, which she hasn't changed for a week, unlike Chu Fan, who might not change socks for a month but still doesn't produce the 'strong aroma' she does.Han Xiaoya's unwashed socks from a week, combined with Chu Fan's socks untouched for a week, mixed with water, boiled, and then left to ferment for a few hours, allowing them to complete the chemical reaction. Can you imagine the taste?
After a while, Chu Fan finally got used to the smell, or rather, his sense of smell had been numbed by the stench. Gripping the Illusion Moon in his hand, he frowned and observed the surrounding environment.
In the corridor, there was the stench of rotten flesh and the bloody smell of fresh blood. These indescribable odors sucked into the lungs, causing intense nausea. Sour water surged in the throat, prompting involuntary retching.Chu Fan clenched his teeth to combat the overwhelming nausea, cautiously examining his surroundings. Not far down the corridor, he could discern the faint movements of encroaching Walkers, their eerie howls, and the unsettling sound of bones grinding together permeating the air.
"Roar—"
"Ugh—ugh—"
"Creak—creak—"
The Walkers unleashed chilling roars, accompanied by the unsettling noise of bones rubbing against each other. As they advanced, their pace quickened, and the cadence of the sounds intensified.
These disconcerting noises invaded Chu Fan's ears, inducing a rhythmic flux in his surroundings. Immersed in this visceral experience, he fell into silence, gradually retreating, while a growing sense of fear took hold. Inhaling deeply, he pretended to maintain composure, asserting that he wasn't afraid—though it was all a mere facade! At this very moment, his legs were shaking so much they were practically turning into jelly. I mean, who, at this point in life, has actually come face to face with real-life Walkers? And now, these Walkers weren't just casually strolling in his direction; they were full-on sprinting straight at him.
Chu Fan wasn't exactly thrilled about confronting his fears, but hey, it was a necessity. There's this delicate young girl behind him, counting on him for protection. If he, with all his training and preparation, decided to take a step back, what would happen to Han Xiaoya? So, facing fear head-on was the only option.
Realizing this, Chu Fan finally mustered up some courage. He pulled himself together, and you could see the fear melting away from his face. This marked the first time he was truly staring fear in the eyes.
The Walkers were closing in, and their appearance was becoming more vivid. The Walkers had this grotesque face, wounds scattered all over, and lips so cracked that they revealed teeth stained with blood. Maggots were crawling all over its body, especially on its unrecognizable face, where they would emerge and retreat, creating this bone-chilling and utterly repulsive sight.
Draped in tattered, blood-soaked garments, the figure bore stains of both red and black, the origins of which remained unknown. Bits of flesh clung to its body, and with each stride, there was an unsettling "plop, plop" accompanied by the dull sound of something hitting the ground. The nauseating scene threatened to make even the most resilient stomachs churn, causing one to almost regurgitate whatever had been recently ingested, bile included.
Chu Fan's expression betrayed terror, and cold sweat streamed down his spine. Suppressing the urge to vomit, he swallowed hard, attempting to use saliva to quell the rising nausea. Clutching the hands of Huan Yue tightly, he couldn't stop the trembling coursing through him.
Forcing himself to remain calm, Chu Fan knew he couldn't allow Huan Yue to slip from his grasp. It was his sole weapon against the approaching horde of Walkers. The cold sweat continued to trickle down his face, sticking to the military-grade mask. The mask, coupled with the stifling heat, rose and fell with each breath, creating an uncomfortable sensation.
Just as the zombies closed in, within striking distance, Chu Fan swiftly targeted the zombie's neck and decisively swung his knife.
"A thud" "Thud, thud, thud..."
The sound of the zombie's head hitting the ground echoed like a bouncing ball, gradually fading after a few rebounds. Thick, black blood instantly sprayed from the neck, unfolding like a fireworks display.
Chu Fan sidestepped to avoid the splattering of zombie blood from all sides. Due to the forceful motion of his recent knife swing, his nerves were overly tense, and he felt a bit weak now. Stumbling, he nearly lost his balance, having to lean against the wall for a brief rest.
Suddenly, a dramatic change unfolded!!!
"Hiss—Ugh—Ah—"
An unpleasant odor swiftly infiltrated Chu Fan's nostrils through the military-grade mask. A colossal shadow loomed before his eyes, a horrifying countenance with no lips, only teeth oozing with tainted blood. It opened a bloodied maw, aiming to deliver a fatal bite to his neck!
The foul black blood oozed relentlessly from the zombie's mouth, creating a dripping rhythm in front of Chu Fan, akin to the mournful song of the Grim Reaper. This nightmarish spectacle induced a spine-chilling shudder, and cold sweat immediately saturated his attire—a sight clearly beyond the capacity of an average person. It had to be a zombie!!!
The zombie materialized without a sound, standing right in front of him, less than an inch away from his neck, seemingly poised to sink its teeth into him. In the nick of time, a jolt that left Chu Fan drenched in cold sweat prompted him to instinctively crouch down. In a spontaneous motion, the moonlight in his hand, resembling a living entity, flicked upward and descended with force—a reflexive and potent swing."Rip!" The only sound that echoed was the tearing of flesh as the zombie's black blood splattered across the blade, forming an elegant arc. Chu Fan instinctively closed his eyes, yet even so, he felt the gruesome spray on half of his face, soaked in the foul blood of the zombie.
"Thud, thud." Accompanied by the dull thumping of an object hitting the ground, the zombie's body collapsed. Before Chu Fan stood a zombie forcefully severed into two halves.
"Crack, crack." The half with a head, teeth continuously clashing, emitted an eerie and unsettling sound. This prompted Chu Fan to exclaim, "Zombies truly are terrifying creatures. Their vitality is so resilient; even in this state, why haven't they died yet?"
Raising the moonlight in his hand, Chu Fan delivered another blow to the zombie's head. The frequency of teeth clashing gradually slowed, and after a few breaths, the zombie finally ceased its unsettling noises.
As the sound of the zombie's demise faded away, Chu Fan's crisis was finally averted!!!The recent scene left him breathless for quite some time. After a moment, still with lingering palpitations, he patted his chest, feeling a sense of lingering fear. In a muttered voice, he expressed his dissatisfaction.
"I almost turned into one of those monstrous zombies. Thankfully, I instinctively reacted in time. It's a good thing I had foresight and wisely wore a mask. Otherwise, the zombie's blood and flesh might have splattered into my mouth. Who knows, I might have become one of them."
"Hoo~~~~" Chu Fan exhaled a long breath, clearing his mind.
Having read plenty of post-apocalyptic novels and watched movies, he knew that even a nail scratch breaking the skin could lead to infection. Who knows if he might turn into a zombie because of this encounter? Therefore, taking precautions for his meticulous and cautious nature, he praised himself.
After experiencing two zombie hunts, Chu Fan still couldn't shake off the lingering fear. He felt a chilling sensation in his clothes, only now realizing that the cold sweat had completely soaked his back, adhering closely to his skin.
Although the crisis had been averted, Chu Fan dared not let his guard down. If he hadn't trained extensively in his dreams, that moment just now, relying solely on his previous instincts could have led to instant demise!
Facing death for the first time, confronting fear head-on, and killing zombies for the first time—after one, then two experiences, Chu Fan's hands no longer trembled. Adjusting the grip on his moonlight blade and calming his fear, his brain gradually regained composure.
In his mind, Chu Fan kept reminding himself not to panic, not to exert too much force, or risk putting himself in an extremely dangerous situation, perhaps even facing immediate demise.
Carefully, he approached the stairwell, starting to clear the zombies at the staircase. One, two, three...
As the number of fallen zombies increased, Chu Fan gradually found the sensation of wielding the blade, and the moonlight in his hand became more proficient. Just clearing two levels of the corridor made the moonlight in his hand feel unusually heavy, and the speed of his swings slowed down considerably. The soreness in his muscles constantly reminded him that his physical exertion was nearing the body's limits. Helplessly, he leaned against the wall for a brief rest, keeping a vigilant eye on his surroundings.
"Sigh! My stamina is still too weak. The body's functions can't keep up with the current expenditure. It's fortunate that I exercised my body earlier for the fight; otherwise, I would have been exhausted by now."Chu Fan took out a bottle of water, removed his military-grade mask, washed his face to clean off the blood stains, and then took a few sips. After resting for a while, he began to continue clearing the zombies in the corridor.
