After we finished paying our respects to Xiaoling, the three of us headed back to the new house. My parents started asking me about my time in the army, but I found it hard to focus. I gave vague answers, my mind preoccupied with thoughts of the water monkeys in the dark pond.

The next morning, bright and early, a police car pulled into Dark Pond Village and parked under the jujube tree in our yard.

I saw two policemen get out of the car, questioning passing villagers before heading straight for our home.And just then, Huangzi hurried over too. After I asked about the police, he explained, "It's not that surprising, really. Some years back, folks around here started reporting sightings of a water monster in the dark pond, and it's been blamed for the occasional drowning. So, every time someone meets that fate in the dark pond, the cops show up to check things out."

As he spoke, Huangzi let out a weary sigh and added, "But those cops, they always brush it off, saying the victims just slipped into the dark pond by accident and got eaten up by fish, which is why their bodies look so gruesome. It's all nonsense if you ask me."

Hearing this, my blood started boiling. Sure, it's the 21st century, and we're not supposed to buy into superstitions, but I could tell you for sure, those victims' bodies weren't mutilated by fish. I've seen Er Ya's body myself, and if you think those injuries were caused by fish, well, I'd sooner believe it was the handiwork of cannibals.I lost my cool and let out a stream of curses at those cops, questioning their competence and authority. Seriously, what kind of cops are they, acting clueless like that?

Caught up in the moment, it felt like all the pent-up frustration from the past few days was bursting out of me. But in my tirade, I completely missed the change in the air around me. When I finally snapped out of it, I found two cops glaring at me, clutching their briefcases tightly, with eyes as wide as a startled bull's.Back in the day, I would've probably quivered in fear, but now, after seven years in the military, there's not much I haven't seen. Besides, I've mustered up the courage to face superiors, so dealing with these two young cops is a piece of cake.

Seeing my stern expression and military attire, the older of the two cops seemed to catch on. He quickly suppressed his inner anger and forced a smile, asking, "You're Qin Yu? Qin Xiaoling's 2nd Elder brother?"

"What's it to you? Do you know me?" I retorted, still feeling annoyed and giving them a disdainful look.

As if sensing my thoughts, the older cop flashed a smile and said, "No need to be suspicious, let's have a chat at your place. There are a few things I'd like to clear up with you."

His friendly tone caught me off guard, so despite my reservations, I nodded in agreement. Leading them back home, Huǎngzi followed closely behind.

During the walk, Huangzi introduced them. The older cop, Cai Chengneng, was the captain of the county's Criminal Investigation Division, known affectionately as Old Cai. The younger one, Wú Xiǎoliàng, was just two years my junior. Everyone called him liàngzi. He graduated from college two years ago and joined the force last year after completing his internship.

Seeing visitors at home, even though my mom had things on her mind, she quickly went forward to greet them. My dad and grandpa were not home, so my older brother took the lead and brewed a pot of tea, pouring a cup for each of us. Then he and my mom stood by, watching.

Once we were all seated, Lao Cai didn't hesitate and said directly, "Listen, Comrade  Qin, you can't go cursing us, the public security officers, in front of everyone. If there are any issues, feel free to talk to me privately. If we're wrong, go ahead and scold me. Lao Cai won't object."Since they gave me an out, I couldn't just keep hammering away,, especially when I didn't have much ground to stand on. And nowadays, if you start yapping about "water monkeys" to the cops, they'll either think you're a loon or drag you off as a phony. It's better to play nice; so, I swallowed my pride, said sorry, and urged them to cut to the chase.Old Cai nodded approvingly, took a delicate sip of tea, and then spoke, "Honestly, let's put the water monkey stuff aside for now. Based on yesterday's forensic exam, we've reached a conclusion: your sister,  Xiǎo Líng, was probably tossed into the dark pond by someone."

"What?" Myself, Huǎngzi, my older brother, and my mom couldn't help but gasp in disbelief. This was a revelation none of us saw coming.

Seeing us getting agitated, Lao Cai quickly urged us to calm down. He went on, "Hey, hey, take it easy. This is serious.  Xiǎo Líng really did suffocate, but it wasn't from drowning. You see, we found water in her mouth, but her belly wasn't filled with it. That means she didn't drown in that pond. Think about it, if she fell in, she'd have swallowed a ton of water before suffocating. So, it's pretty clear someone put her in there after she died."

When Lao Cai dropped that bombshell, I instantly became furious. I grabbed his collar and snapped, "You know this and you're not doing anything about it?"

Maybe I was too forceful because Old Cai's face paled with just one tug. I guess he didn't expect me to react so strongly. Others quickly stepped in, pulling me away, afraid I might do something even more reckless.At this moment, the other officer, Wú Xiǎoliàng, hurriedly interjected, "Comrade Qin! Please don't get agitated. It's not Captain Cai's fault. Here's the situation: we only found that Xiao Ling's blouse was missing two buttons and there were some vague injuries. Other than that, we have no other leads. Based on our assessment, the victim was likely harassed or even the target of attempted assault by the perpetrator, resulting in her accidental death. Therefore, the dark pond isn't the primary crime scene; it's just where the perpetrator disposed of the body. We're currently doing our best to search the scene, but it will take some time!"

With Huǎngzi's persuasion, I made a concerted effort to adjust my emotions, hoping to find some calm. Eventually, I found myself sinking weakly onto the chair, my head swimming, devoid of any desire to speak.

At that moment, Old Cai rose from his seat, giving my shoulder a comforting pat as he said, "Comrade Qin, I know you're feeling really bad about this, but what's done is done. We can only choose to accept the reality. I hope you can take some time to relax."

Lao Cai then gestured to his colleague before turning to leave. However, he couldn't resist adding, "Rest assured, we will definitely find the culprit. Originally, we came to speak with you today to learn more about  Xiǎo Líng's interactions before her passing. However, seeing your unstable emotions, let's discuss this another time. Nevertheless, liàngzi and I will be conducting investigations around the village these days. If you remember anything suspicious, feel free to come find us. You're welcome anytime." With these words, Lao Cai and liàngzi exited through the doorway.
