Huǎngzi made a valid point. We'd reached this point, and there was no use dwelling on it further. We just had to gather our courage and keep pushing forward.
But right at that moment, Lǎo Cài, who was beside me, suddenly exclaimed, "Oh no!"
I turned to look, and to my shock, he was gone in the blink of an eye.
Huǎngzi and I exchanged a puzzled glance but soon noticed something unusual. There was a door on the right side of the cave wall, just about the height of a person.
Surprised, Huǎngzi and I leaned in to take a look. With the beam of our headlamps, everything behind the door was revealed in an instant.
We couldn't believe our eyes. Behind the door was a stone chamber, and it was surprisingly spacious, at least fifty square feet in size.
Near the inner edge of the stone chamber, there were stone platforms on both sides, resembling beds. Couldn't quite figure out their purpose, and apart from those, the room was pretty bare.
As for Lǎo Cài, he was lying on the ground beneath us, letting out groans. Seems he slipped into this chamber without us even noticing.
I hurried over to help Lǎo Cài up, only to find his face turning pale, and sweat pouring down his head like large soybeans. Couldn't tell if he had taken a nasty fall, but the pain had contorted his entire face.
After a moment, Lǎo Cài finally caught his breath. Weakly, he said, "I've hurt my leg. Please don't make me get up, I can't put any weight on it. It hurts too much."
"How'd this happen all of a sudden? Is it your left leg or your right?" I asked, helping Lǎo Cài sit down on the ground. Looks like he really banged up his bone.
Huǎngzi and Lǎo Cài weren't getting along too well, originally, I thought he just stood by and watched the commotion, but hearing how badly he was hurt, Huǎngzi couldn't resist walking over.
Lǎo Cài was biting his lip, putting in a lot of effort before he said, "It's my own fault. I was just blindly following the wall and didn't even notice there was a hidden door there. That's how I ended up falling in. But it feels like there's something on the ground that stabbed my right leg."
Stabbed? I couldn't help but think maybe he stepped on some kind of mechanism! Because this place looks like an ancient tomb, and you know how tombs are, always filled with traps, especially these big ones. Nobody really knows what's in here.
"I'll take a look!" Huǎngzi's face suddenly turned serious. He immediately crouched down to check Lǎo Cài's condition.
Seeing Huǎngzi put aside any grudges and show genuine concern, Lǎo Cài felt a bit embarrassed and spoke in a softer tone, "Seems like something pierced my ankle, and it's really hurting."Huǎngzi nodded in understanding as he carefully rolled up Lǎo Cài's pants leg. I could see a small wound on his ankle, blood seeping out, and the color seemed off.
Taking a sharp breath, Huǎngzi exclaimed, "Oh no! The wound's turning black, you're poisoned! Must've been stung by a scorpion's tail."
"A scorpion? How on earth did that thing get in this cave?" Lǎo Cài seemed bewildered, not fully grasping the severity of the situation.
"For now, let's not worry about how it got here, let's focus on treating the wound," Huǎngzi said, reaching for a lighter from his pocket. "I'll cauterize the wound to neutralize the poison, brace yourself."
With a hesitant nod from Lǎo Cài, Huǎngzi wasted no time. He ignited the lighter and directed the flame straight at Lǎo Cài's wound, causing an immediate cry of pain from him."The windproof lighter spat out a fierce flame, and within seconds, Lǎo Cài's wound was charred, leaving a smell of burnt flesh lingering in the air.
As Huǎngzi extinguished the lighter, I noticed Lǎo Cài's face contorting in pain, his body twisting as he gritted his teeth and let out a muted groan.
Feeling a surge of concern, I asked, 'Is that going to be enough?'
Huǎngzi paused for a moment, his brow furrowing in thought before responding, 'Hard to say! Scorpions aren't supposed to be found in caves like this, and if they are, they're likely corpse scorpions. Normal remedies won't do much against their poison.'
Confused, I pressed on, 'Corpse scorpions? What on earth is that?'
Huǎngzi seemed hesitant, struggling to find the right words. After a moment, I urged him on, 'Come on, spill it! We don't have time to beat around the bush!'"Huǎngzi hesitated for a moment before explaining, "Corpse scorpions, as the name suggests, are scorpions that feed on corpses."
These creatures start off as ordinary scorpions but, due to some twist of fate, end up sealed in tombs, never to see the light of day again. When they get hungry, they feast on the corpses within the tomb. Once there's no more food, they go into a dormant state, similar to bears hibernating.
After a brief pause, Huǎngzi seemed to recall something and continued, "Corpse scorpions are just like zombies in movies. Once disturbed by living creatures, they wake up on their own, and their poison is nearly impossible to counteract."
Lǎo Cài and I were taken aback, finding Huǎngzi's words somewhat far-fetched as he brought up zombies out of the blue.
Seeing our skeptical expressions, Huǎngzi added, "I'm not making this up. It's best you keep this in mind. Honestly, I've always suspected this place to be a tomb, so having corpse scorpions around wouldn't be surprising."
Being a cop, Lǎo Cài was naturally a staunch materialist and dismissed, "Come on! It's the 21st century, and you're still stuck in those old feudal ways, talking about believing in science."
Huǎngzi chuckled in response and quipped, "Alright, then let me give you a proper scientific rundown."
According to Huǎngzi's explanation, the formation of corpse poison is actually quite straightforward. It could be due to various environmental factors or other causes that lead to a corpse undergoing some sort of mutation during decomposition, resulting in the formation of an unknown virus on its surface.
This virus is the main factor halting further decomposition of the corpse. However, for living beings, this virus is extremely hazardous. It doesn't take long for it to cause rapid necrosis of the blood in the body.
Huǎngzi somehow got hold of an ancient tome, which roughly outlined two types of corpse poison, both associated with the era of the ancient tomb.In ancient texts, it's recorded that in tombs dating back to the Han Dynasty and earlier, the effects of corpse poison weren't too severe. If someone got poisoned but didn't sustain a fatal injury, they could use sticky rice to detoxify. After several months, they would recover, and this level of corpse poison was considered the mildest.
But what about tombs from the Han Dynasty and later?
Well, that's a whole different story. The poison is much more potent. If someone gets hit anywhere on their body, it's basically a death sentence. Even if they use sticky rice and snake wine to detoxify, it only delays the spread of the poison and doesn't cure it completely.
Based on Huǎngzi's judgment, this cave must be at least two thousand years old. So, he was certain that Lǎo Cài had fallen victim to the second type of corpse poison. In other words, there was no hope for him, plain and simple.
When we heard how serious the situation was, not only was Lǎo Cài dumbfounded on the spot, but I also felt a tightness in my scalp.
I asked if there really was no medicine available to treat it.
Huǎngzi shook his head and said, "There is a cure, but it's a slim hope. The only way to detoxify is to find the legendary 'Spring of Earth,' drinking from which can neutralize any poison and cure all ailments. But that's just a legend. Where in the world could we find it?"Huǎngzi wasn't entirely sure about the "Spring of Earth" either. He explained that it's described in ancient texts as something mystical, believed to be formed from the essence of heaven and earth, and not something you stumble upon every day.
Seeing the fear in Lǎo Cài's eyes, Huǎngzi quickly changed the topic, saying, "But who knows? With modern medicine advancing so much, maybe there's hope to overcome the effects of corpse poison."
After a brief rest, Lǎo Cài's wound had healed completely, and the pain had eased. He declared, "Alright, whether the legend holds true or not, since we're not dropping dead at this moment, let's make our way out of here!"
Everything within the stone chamber was clear to us, so we saw no reason to linger. But just as we were about to leave, we glanced back and were left dumbfounded.
Out of nowhere, there lay a partially decomposed body at the entrance, topped with a palm-sized black scorpion. Its tail was raised menacingly as if poised to strike at the three of us at any moment.
A shiver ran down my spine, and my scalp began to tingle uncontrollably. I swear, when we entered, there was absolutely nothing at the entrance. I couldn't fathom when this body had materialized behind us, and there hadn't been even the faintest sound throughout our time in the chamber. It was downright chilling.
