I suddenly had a thought - back when we first stepped into the cave, there was that crackling sound in the earpiece. Could it be that we were actually being interfered with by electromagnetic waves?
So, if that's the case, Professor Zhang and the others weren't in any danger after all. It was just a misunderstanding on our part. Do we really need to keep going forward?
Or should we turn back now and let Xiǎo Jiāng know about this? It would save them from worrying unnecessarily.
Seeing me hesitate, Huángzi's expression turned slightly sour as he chimed in, "Come on, Lǎo Qín, don't joke around. Have you seen any sign of Professor Zhāng and the others on our way here? I'm willing to bet they're up on that platform. Who knows, they might be dealing with those water monkeys right this moment. We've come this far, and if we don't go up to check, how can we live with ourselves? What if something happens to them up there? We'd regret it forever. We're talking about five lives here!"Lǎo Cài was really straightforward, completely missing the subtle undertone in Huángzi's words. He immediately chimed in, saying, "Nicely put! If you hadn't said that just now, I wouldn't have guessed you're actually quite righteous."
Internally, I couldn't help but chuckle. While others might not grasp Huángzi's true nature, could I really be clueless about his intentions?
This guy's in the antique business, and it's highly likely he's deciphered something from those patterns. It wouldn't be surprising if this place turned out to be an underwater tomb. On the surface, Huángzi might talk about saving people, but deep down, he's probably got his eye on the treasures in the tomb.
I couldn't let Huángzi's true colors show in front of Lǎo Cài, so I just gave him a meaningful glance and took the opportunity to tease him, "Lǎo Cài, you don't know half of it. Huángzi may look fierce, but he's actually a good guy. If an 80-year-old lady needs help crossing the street, he won't hesitate to lend a hand and even walk her all the way home. And that's not all - since he was ten years old, he's been one of the county's model youths, featured on TV and everything."I thought Lǎo Cài would pick up on the subtle hints in my words, but it turns out he's as clueless as they come. He looked at Huángzi with genuine surprise, as if he'd just stumbled upon a revelation, and said, "Oh! Is that how it is? Well, then I must apologize for my earlier disrespect."
Huǎngzi isn't oblivious; he could definitely sense the undertones in my words. With a hint of irritation, he shot Lǎo Cài a glance and then exclaimed, "Are we going up or not? Can we make a decision already? Lǎo Qín, come on, can't you see Huǎngzi has his good points? You just had to lay it all out in front of Lǎo Cài. A little humility goes a long way, you know!"
This guy's got skin thicker than a rhino; I've never seen anything like it. His boasting skills are unmatched, and if you engage with him, you're bound to get caught in his spray of words.
Seeing both Huángzi and me stuck in this situation, Lǎo Cài chuckled and said, "You two big guys are acting like a couple of girls. At this point, it's clear we need to go up and take a look."
Huǎngzi felt a bit dejected when nobody paid him any mind. After assessing the surroundings of the platform, he took the lead and leaned in.
Taking a glance myself, I saw cliffs all around, with very few protrusions. Despite the mere three-meter height, it wasn't easy for someone without skills to climb up.Lǎo Cài, with his police background, probably has some training for this kind of thing, so he'll likely manage to get up there just fine. But when it comes to Huǎngzi's agility, it's a bit of a mystery how he'll pull it off.
However, Huǎngzi didn't hesitate at all. He spotted a jutting rock, leaped upward, breaking through the water's surface, then swiftly reached out and grabbed hold of a rock, clinging to it like a gecko.
After a brief pause, he slowly turned his head and spotted another jutting rock. Using the same technique, he quickly climbed up over two meters high.Though I've scaled plenty of obstacles during my time in the military, there was always a forward momentum to rely on. Even a three-meter height, as long as it wasn't a sheer vertical wall, wasn't too daunting with the push of momentum.
But now, in the water, without that forward momentum, everything seemed impossible. I had to rely solely on the strength of my fingers, gripping tightly onto those jutting rocks, to inch my way upward. I never expected Huǎngzi to ascend so effortlessly, catching me off guard.
Following him, Lǎo Cài made his ascent. Learning from Huǎngzi's technique, he smoothly climbed up without a hitch.
I was the last to ascend. Just as I reached halfway, a startled cry from Huǎngzi echoed, and before I could react, Lǎo Cài, who had just ascended, also exclaimed abruptly, "Oh my god!"My heart skipped a beat. Why were they shouting so loudly? Had they encountered the water monkeys?
This sudden shock threw me off balance. I unintentionally loosened my grip, and before I could even utter a word of alarm, my body began to slide uncontrollably down the rock face.
With a splash, I plunged into the water. As I resurfaced, I felt a burning sensation on my face, and several areas stung painfully, undoubtedly scraped and bruised.
My face was scraped and stung by the water, causing intense pain. I gasped for air in the water for quite some time before finally regaining my composure.
But my main concern was for Huǎngzi and the others. I yelled out for them, but despite several attempts, there was no response. Panic seized me. Could they really be in trouble?
Just as I was about to stretch my body to climb again, I saw Huǎngzi's big head peeking out from the edge of the platform, looking bewildered.
Seeing him unharmed, I breathed a sigh of relief and couldn't help but shout, "What were you yelling about up there? Look at my face! And where's Lǎo Cài?"Huǎngzi initially seemed taken aback, but then he glanced at my expression and quickly grasped the situation. With a playful grin, he remarked, "I wasn't just hollering for no reason. It was a genuine expression of amazement, straight from the heart. You'll understand once you join us up here. And don't worry, Lǎo Cài is fine. He's probably still up there, marveling at the sight!"
Internally, I let out a string of curses. Did he see his ancestors or something? Did he really need to express his surprise in such an exaggerated manner? It's driving me absolutely nuts.
Then there's Lǎo Cài. He's usually cool and composed, but judging from the sounds he made just now, he sounded even more distressed than Huǎngzi. What's going on with these guys? Since they're both unharmed, what on earth did they witness up there?
"Could it be that I was onto something? Were Huǎngzi's ancestors really buried here?"
Gathering my courage, I resumed my climb. This time, I made sure to learn from my earlier mistakes. Even if I heard shouts from above or if they were truly attacked by water monkeys, I pretended not to notice and let them handle it themselves.
After a strenuous effort, I finally made it onto the platform. But before I could even straighten up, I immediately sensed that something was off. With just a quick glance, I found myself completely frozen in place.
"My goodness! What in the world is going on?" I exclaimed as I gazed upon the sea of white before me, almost convinced that I was hallucinating.
Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that the entire platform would be covered in layers of bones, resembling dried stalks of sorghum. It was so densely packed that there was barely any room to stand, and if I hadn't known beforehand about the astonishing sight awaiting me, I might have screamed in disbelief.
As I straightened up, a chilling breeze seemed to come out of nowhere, causing me to shiver with an eerie sense of foreboding.
Taking a sharp intake of breath, I began to cautiously step over the corpses towards Huǎngzi and the others.
The bones on the ground belonged mostly to crawling creatures, but there were also some from fish, each displaying a variety of colors. Some bones had been there for years, turning a shade of brown like old coffee. Every time my foot touched them, they would crackle and break with a sharp "snap."Huǎngzi gave me a playful smirk and proudly remarked, "How's that for a surprise? Quite the eye-opener, huh? When I first glanced over, I almost mistook this place for a butcher's yard!"
Lǎo Cài squatted down, his expression serious as he carefully examined the bones one by one. Occasionally, he'd pick up a piece, scrutinize it, and let out a low grinding noise with his teeth. Huǎngzi and I didn't interrupt him, thinking that maybe this seasoned detective was on the hunt for clues.
After a while, Lǎo Cài stood up, his face etched with indignation. "Damn it, there's every kind of bone here, even human bones. Judging by the setup, it seems this is where water monkeys dump their trash. With this many bones, who knows how long they've been using this spot?"
Huǎngzi, not too bothered by the specifics, reminded us, "Hey folks, now's not the time for shock or anger. Since there's no sign of Professor Zhang and the gang here, let's split up and search. We can't afford to delay the rescue mission any longer."
