It's the start of winter now, and the water in the pond feels chilly even through our diving suits.
This marks my first dive, lugging around about thirty pounds of gear underwater. I'm struggling to maintain my balance, feeling a bit out of my element. Thank goodness for these wide toes of mine, giving me some extra buoyancy; otherwise, I'm pretty sure I'd be sinking to the pond's bottom in no time.
Meanwhile, Lǎo Cài is in a similar boat. As soon as he goes under, he just keeps sinking, not even bothering to turn himself around.
Huǎngzi was the only one who seemed to have a somewhat professional diving posture, subtly swaying his legs to effortlessly control his body. It made me think he wasn't just boasting.
Watching Lǎo Cài and me struggling, Huǎngzi intentionally or unintentionally showed off his extraordinary diving skills in front of us. But with his sturdy build, he looked more like an underwater penguin at the moment, which actually brought a bit of humor to the situation.
To be honest, I know a bit about diving too. Generally, it can be divided into three types: experiential diving for first-timers, leisure diving for certified divers, and overseas training courses suitable for beginners or specialized training programs. In my current situation, I belong to the third category. The biggest drawback is being overly nervous, which results in the inability to maintain a parallel body position underwater and the inability to control the breathing regulator properly. This is a common issue for beginners, and with more practice, these problems will gradually disappear.
Before long, we had descended to the bottom of the water. For me and Lǎo Cài, it was more like sinking to the bottom of the pond, while Huǎngzi had smoothly reached the bottom freely and was already waiting for us ahead.
At that moment, Xiǎojiāng's voice came through the earpiece, "Lǎo Cài, move forward about thirty meters, then search to the right. You should see the crack on the stone. Be very careful."Lǎo Cài gestured OK in front of the camera, and then we continued swimming forward.
Heading in the direction of the right hand, we proceeded along the way, occasionally encountering a few small fish, but not seeing any big ones, probably all devoured by the water monkeys.
Those unidentified small fish were particularly afraid of people, as they would all disappear at the slightest movement from us.
Carefully observing the underwater situation, I found that as I had expected, the bottom of the pond was not very wide, due to the relationship between the two peaks on the left and right, both sides were steep cliffs, all of black rocky mountains, and the bottom of the pond was also scattered with many black stones.
Huǎngzi got curious and picked up a stone from the ground, examining it closely. I took a peek as well. The stone's surface was smooth and shiny, reflecting the light from our headlamps. It had a texture that reminded me of a magnet, but it didn't actually attract anything.
As I glanced at the black stones of various shapes and sizes beneath my feet, a sense of unease crept over me. It felt like I had stepped into a dark abyss, and an inexplicable feeling of strangeness washed over me, making me feel incredibly unsettled.
Just then, Huǎngzi signaled for us to halt as he had spotted a crack in the stone.
It was only then that I realized the crack wasn't as narrow as it had appeared on the computer screen. It was about three meters tall and around one and a half meters wide, with a very regular shape. Moreover, there were grooves on either side of the opening, suggesting that there had once been a heavy stone door here. What really caught me off guard was the sight of the cave entrance, covered in intricate carvings that resembled ancient patterns or perhaps even ancient script. It was a chaotic jumble of lines that left me utterly perplexed, making me think that Professor Zhang must have lingered here due to the same curiosity.
Among us three, Huǎngzi seemed to be the most observant, his hands delicately exploring the wall with a hint of excitement visible even through his diving suit. If it weren't for Xiǎo Jiāng's voice crackling over the earpiece, he might have continued his exploration.
As I stared at the irregular opening, a wave of unease washed over me.
The crack was enveloped in darkness, swallowing the beams of our headlamps whole as soon as they pierced into it. Despite its apparent spaciousness, I couldn't help but wonder why ancient people would carve such a cave. My intuition told me it must have held something related to ancient tombs; otherwise, Huǎngzi wouldn't have been so captivated.
It was peculiar how, despite the chilly water outside hovering at four or five degrees Celsius, the moment we entered the cave, the temperature noticeably rose. Wrapped in its warmth, it provided an unexpectedly comforting sensation.Right then, we heard crackling sounds like electricity buzzing in our earpieces, but it was just a fleeting moment before everything went silent again. We exchanged puzzled looks, none of us having a clue about what had just happened.
Luckily, the three of us didn't encounter the water monkey attack that Professor Zhang and his team faced upon entering the crevice. Instead, an eerie calm settled over us, increasing my sense of unease even more.
The cavern inside was unexpectedly vast; apart from the exit behind us, it was empty, giving the impression of boundless space. Lost in the cavern, we had no sense of direction, unable to even find a spot to take a breather.
At that point, Huǎngzi gestured to us and pointed upwards, suggesting that we swim up to take a look.I was thinking the same thing, so without a second thought, I swam upward. After about ten seconds or so, the pressure on my head suddenly eased, and I realized I had surfaced.
Glancing around, I noticed that the cavern wasn't completely filled with water; there was still about ten meters of space above. Not far to the right, there was an open area resembling a platform, but it was about three meters above the water level, making it a bit challenging to reach.
Perhaps due to holding his breath underwater for too long, Huǎngzi immediately took off his hood upon surfacing, leaving only his headlamp strapped to his forehead.
After taking a deep breath, Huǎngzi complained, "Damn it, we finally surfaced! Didn't expect to find a hidden spot like this. But hey, the oxygen level seems decent. You guys shouldn't hold back either. Let's all take off our hoods!"
With Huǎngzi's lead, Lǎo Cài and I didn't hesitate. We took off our hoods one after the other. Suddenly, a refreshing breeze of moist air hit us. I paused for a moment, thinking that since there was airflow, there might be other exits here.
Once Huǎngzi had caught his breath, he pointed to the platform ahead and asked us, "Should we go up and check it out?"
After scanning the area once again, Lǎo Cài nodded and said, "Professor Zhang's team must have gone up there too. Of course, we should check it out."
Huǎngzi agreed with a nod and tried to call out through the earpiece, presumably to let Xiao Jiang and the others outside know our situation. However, there was no response on the walkie-talkie.
"Huǎngzi exclaimed in confusion, 'Could my equipment be malfunctioning?' Then he looked at me and said, 'Lǎo Qín, send a message to the outside, let them know we've safely reached the crevice.'
I nodded and called out to Xiǎo Jiāng, but the situation was the same as Huǎngzi's - no response.
Lǎo Cài chimed in, 'Looks like it's not our equipment that's the problem, but rather some sort of interference like electromagnetic waves in this cave.'"
