Just as I was about to get up and search elsewhere, Lǎo Cài suddenly let out a loud cry up ahead. It was almost like he saw something terrifying. Without a second thought, Huǎngzi and I rushed over to help him up, asking in a panic, "What happened?"

Lǎo Cài pointed ahead, trembling, and said, "It's their bodies!""They?" It didn't take much thought to realize that when Lǎo Cài mentioned "them," he must be talking about Professor Zhang's group. It seemed like something really bad had gone down!

Huǎngzi and I both felt a chill run down our spines as we followed his pointing finger. Oh my goodness! The sight was almost too much to bear. No wonder even someone as accustomed to seeing corpses as Lǎo Cài was visibly shaken.

It turned out that lying about seven or eight meters ahead of us were two bodies the navy soldiers from yesterday!At that moment, their chests were slashed open, exposing their organs entirely. What struck me as most chilling was how their tongues hung out of their mouths, elongated like those of a hanged man, while all their limbs had been removed.

It sent a shiver down my spine. These were two individuals, yet their current state resembled animals on a butcher's table, already dismembered.

But why hadn't those water monkeys just eaten them outright? What was the point of leaving them here? And more importantly, when Professor Zhang's group arrived, didn't they notice these bodies?

If they did notice, why didn't they do something about it? The scene was too cruel to fathom.We couldn't bear watching any longer, so we covered our mouths and began to vomit. Huǎngzi, being used to such scenes, quickly regained his composure. He grumbled, "Those darn water monkeys, are always up to heartless tricks. How am I supposed to enjoy a roasted whole lamb after this?"

I shot him a glare and retorted, "You're still thinking about eating roasted whole lamb? If you end up getting roasted yourself, don't blame it on bad luck. Look at the situation now. Don't think I'm not warning you. You're tall and beefy, the most dangerous among us three."

Huǎngzi shrugged it off, lifting his submachine gun with confidence. "Lǎo Qín, you're just jealous. I've been bluffing my way through all these years, relying on my size to intimidate. If those water monkeys want trouble, bring it on. I'll turn them into Swiss cheese."

Lǎo Cài, knowing Huǎngzi's penchant for exaggeration, quickly interjected, "Quit your nonsense. Save the bravado for when you actually encounter those water monkeys. Let's focus on the task at hand for now."Huǎngzi, usually one to chime in, oddly stayed silent at this moment, leaving me puzzled.

Just as I was about to rib him about a sudden change of heart, he gestured for me to hush, his gaze fixed ahead as if he'd stumbled upon something new.

After a moment, he turned back to us and suggested, "There's a cave up ahead. Let's go take a look." He pointed ahead for us to see.

Following his gesture, I noticed a cave entrance on the left side of the rocky wall, a detail I had overlooked in my focus on the sea of bones. Though not very tall, it was wide enough for the three of us to enter side by side. It likely served as the water monkeys' hideout.

With our rifles at the ready, we proceeded cautiously. Lǎo Cài led the way, while Huǎngzi and I flanked him, alert to our surroundings.

As we stepped over the white bones, the atmosphere grew increasingly tense, interrupted only by the occasional creak underfoot.Facing the prospect of encountering ruthless murderers or ferocious beasts in the depths of the primitive forest, I've never felt such unease. It's as if my fear isn't just about the specific threat, but more about the unsettling fear of the unknown.

Humans are complex beings, full of contradictions. We possess an innate curiosity about the unknown, yet simultaneously harbor a deep-seated fear of it.

As we approached the mouth of the cave, Lǎo Cài gestured for Huǎngzi and me to pause, suggesting, "Why don't we take a moment to listen for any sounds inside before making any decisions?"

Huǎngzi, known for his fearless demeanor, confidently aimed his rifle at the cave entrance and remarked, "What's there to fear? Look at these firearms in our hands. They're the real deal. Even those water monkeys won't dare to challenge us."

We exchanged a knowing glance, finding Huǎngzi's words both reassuring and logical. With firearms in hand, the water monkeys, mere flesh and blood, posed no significant threat.

As we mulled over the situation, we cautiously advanced forward. Just as we were about to reach the mouth of the cave, we suddenly heard two dull thuds, as if something was leaping out from inside.

Our nerves were already stretched tight, and this sudden burst of activity nearly scared the living daylights out of us. Instinctively, I took a step back, almost raising my rifle to fire.

Lǎo Cài immediately had a thought and hurriedly cautioned, "Hold your fire! It might be Professor Zhang and his team. Let's take a closer look first."

Huǎngzi shook his head, saying, "No, I caught sight of it just now, right near the entrance of the cave."

We focused our gaze and, sure enough, on the left side of the cave entrance, there was a dark mass squatting motionless on the ground, its status of being alive or dead unclear.

My heart skipped a beat. Could it be Professor Zhang's team coming out?

The thought crossed my mind to rush over and check, but Huǎngzi pulled me back.

For once, Huǎngzi was serious. He said to me, "Why are you so impulsive? Let's assess the situation first. When I glanced over with my headlamp earlier, it seemed to reflect back. Something's definitely not right."Lǎo Cài's voice was tinged with excitement as he exclaimed, "Reflection? It must be coming from the equipment of Professor Zhang and his team."

Huǎngzi shook his head thoughtfully, explaining, "I don't think so. If it were equipment reflecting light, it shouldn't be glowing green."

At that moment, Huǎngzi seemed to have a sudden realization, his demeanor shifting abruptly to one of nervousness.

Taking a deep breath, he muttered, "Damn it! That thing must be a water monkey. Only animal eyes would shine with a green hue."

"Did you get a good look? Is it alive or dead?" Lǎo Cài asked, a hint of skepticism in his voice.

Huǎngzi replied that the creature had remained squatting motionless on the ground the whole time. He couldn't tell if it was alive or dead, but judging from the earlier rustling sounds, he suspected it was alive.

Lǎo Cài, with a hint of excitement, called out tentatively towards the cave entrance, "Hey, Professor Zhang! It's me, Lǎo Cài from the detective squad. If it's you guys, just give us a holler."

We watched intently, but after Lǎo Cài's shout, the thing inside remained as still as ever. My doubts only grew stronger. Maybe Huǎngzi was onto something; perhaps it really was some sort of water monkey.

With no response forthcoming, Huǎngzi decided to take action. He hoisted his submachine gun, without a moment's hesitation, and let off a few rounds into the dark depths of the cave.

As the echoes of gunfire faded away, a pitiful wail pierced the silence, a mix between a wolf's howl and a monkey's cry, sending chills down my spine. But I knew, deep down, no human could produce such a sound.

Watching the wisps of smoke curl from the gun barrel, Huǎngzi let out a satisfied breath, nodding to himself. He praised the efficiency of military gear, not just for its manageable recoil but also for its subdued report.

With a smug grin, he turned to us and remarked, "Did you catch that? Must've been the water monkey. Crafty little thing, playing possum to throw us off. Good thing I was ready for it."
