The next morning, just before we were about to leave, my Dage quietly stopped Huǎngzi and me. He asked if something had happened because no one said a word last night. He mentioned that Old Man Han had said Huǎngzi and I were destined to encounter water-

related troubles and shouldn't get involved in such matters.(Note :Dage : The eldest son in the family） Huǎngzi and I quickly assured my Dage, offering a few comforting words before hurrying off.

Upon reaching the dark pond, the scene mirrored yesterday's, yet the atmosphere felt heavy. Some soldiers were suiting up, while others operated equipment quietly. Not a single unnecessary word was uttered, not even by Professor Zhang.

As I watched Professor Zhang prepare his diving gear, I couldn't help but wonder if he intended to join the dive. Could a professor with no physical strength really manage it?

After adjusting his equipment, Professor Zhang advised me, "There are no guarantees with this dive. If anything goes awry down there, tell Captain Cài not to take matters into his own hands. Instead, have him contact the city and inform them of our predicament. They'll send help. However, remember that this incident occurred in your village, so maintaining secrecy is paramount. I trust you can handle that."

I nodded in reassurance, and Professor Zhang visibly relaxed before leading four soldiers into the water.

Huǎngzi and I went along, and he remarked with surprise, "Can't believe it. The old man's still trying to prove something at his age. I bet if anyone's going to run into trouble down there, it'll be him."

It was early morning, and while villagers either tended to their fields or gathered for a game of cards, no one dared to venture near the dark pond after the recent tragedy. Who would risk it? It was absurd.

So, Huǎngzi and I sat idly on the grass, feeling utterly bored.With nothing much to do, Huǎngzi couldn't stand the loneliness and insisted we go chat with those three young soldiers.

The soldiers weren't much for conversation. They always spoke with a nerdy air about them—answer when asked, otherwise silent.

After a brief chat, Huǎngzi couldn't contain himself and started complaining on the side.

After a few days of being around Huǎngzi, the soldiers had learned to ignore his antics, focusing instead on the computer screens in front of them.

On the screen, there were five small squares, each showing a live feed from the miniature cameras carried by Professor Zhang and his team.

The live feeds were slightly delayed, but clear enough for us to see what was happening underwater.

I watched as Professor Zhang, along with four soldiers, quickly descended to the depths of the pond. Then, Professor Zhang signaled with his hands, indicating the group should split into two teams and search for cracks in the rocks.A couple of us nodded, and we split into two teams. Professor Zhang teamed up with a soldier named Hu, while the other three formed their own group.

Before long, Professor Zhang located the crack in the rock and gestured toward the video camera, signaling for the team above to call back the other group.

That's when I realized that Professor Zhang and his team were equipped with miniature earpieces, but with oxygen tubes in their mouths, they couldn't speak, only receive messages.

Soon enough, all five of them gathered together. Professor Zhang pointed at the crack in the rock and then at their guns, indicating that everyone to stay alert as they might encounter water monkeys soon.

After conveying these instructions, Professor Zhang was about to enter the crack in the rock when he suddenly stopped midway. It seemed like he had discovered something near the crack. After inspecting for a while, he finally entered the crevice, followed by the others.

Just then, the screens on the computer suddenly distorted and displayed interference, flashing a few times before all five video feeds went black.

One soldier named Xiǎo Jiāng immediately panicked and shouted into the microphone, "Professor Zhang, come back quickly!"

Meanwhile, another soldier named Xiǎo Hēi also grew anxious. He tapped his walkie-talkie and asked his companion, "What's going on? Could it be a malfunction with the equipment?"

Xiǎo Jiāng shook his head and said, "It's impossible. These devices are all military-grade, so their quality must be top-notch. Besides, even if there were equipment issues, it wouldn't cause a collective failure, right? Most likely, Professor Zhang and his team have encountered the water monkeys."

With no other options, Xiǎo Jiāng turned to me and said, "Qin Ge, we can't assess the situation down there now, nor can we contact Professor Zhang's team. So, I'll need you to quickly inform Detective Lǎo Cài from the criminal investigation team. Ask him to call the city and report that something has gone wrong here."

Note: Ge means brother. 

As I watched the scene unfold, even without Xiǎo jiāng's prompt, I would've felt compelled to inform Lao Cai, especially since Professor Zhang had given me a heads-up beforehand.

But you see, having just returned from my military service, I hadn't had the chance to grab myself a cellphone yet. So, I turned to Huǎngzi and urged, "Quick, give Lǎo Cài a call."

Huǎngzi nodded eagerly, swiftly pulling out his cell phone to dial the number.When Lǎo Cài received the call, he immediately inquired about the situation, evidently sensing something amiss. Huǎngzi didn't hold back and promptly briefed him on the situation here, as per Professor Zhang's instructions, urging Lǎo Cài to call the city for backup.

We waited at the scene for about an hour before Lǎo Cài and  Wú rushed over in a flurry. The first thing he said upon meeting was, "What's going on, folks?"

Given the urgency of the situation just now, Lǎo Cài had only heard a vague outline over the phone. As for the details, he was clueless, knowing only that Professor Zhang and his team had encountered trouble at the bottom of the dark pond.

At that moment, when Lǎo Cài brought up the topic, Xiǎo jiāng appeared embarrassed as he recounted the entire incident in detail to him.

Lǎo Cài's expression changed after listening, and then he seemed to remember something. He slapped his forehead and exclaimed, "Oh no! I was so rushed to call the city leaders that I forgot to bring people from the bureau for the rescue." Then he turned to us and asked, "How long have Professor Zhang and his team been down there? Still no contact?"

Xiǎo jiāng immediately shook his head, saying, "Yes, Professor Zhang and his team have been down for a couple of hours now, and we haven't been able to reach them. I think they've most likely encountered an emergency."

Lǎo Cài remarked, "They've been down for so long? This complicates things."

He scratched his head and continued, "The people sent down from above won't arrive for at least two hours. By then, the people below might have already run into trouble. I'll go down to assess the situation first, and you all wait up here." Lǎo Cài finished speaking and went to get his diving equipment.I never imagined detectives would be going scuba diving, so I felt a bit concerned and grabbed him, asking, "Do you know how to scuba dive? Please, don't put yourself in danger."

Lǎo Cài quickly reassured me, saying, "Don't worry, I've had some training in this. I know my way around."

Seeing Xiǎo jiāng and the others still staring at us in confusion, Lǎo Cài grew frustrated and said, "What's with the blank stares? I've never even seen these devices before. Can someone help me put them on, please? I can't just go down there with nothing on my head, can I?"
